Nibs our cat gave birth to three healthy kittens. I got a call from
Janis ~4:00pm
saying that a kitten was already born. I raced home, meeting the same dang
train at
three separate railroad crossings. When I got home heard the story of how
Nibs had
come over to Mary and began squatting and whining. That was the first clue
things
were happening.

With the first kitten, Nibs was a bit frantic. She didn't
know to use the box we'd
provided. So she dropped her tabby under our hutch in the dining room.
Somehow,
before I got home, Janis had gotten Nibs and kitten #1 into the box.
Everyone was leaving Nibs alone, so she wouldn't feel flustered having
to deal with
gawkers. I went nearby and it seemed to not bother the new queen. So I
got to watch
the birth of #2 and #3. Mostly she'd lick and preen, then moments before
a kitten
would arrive she'd yowl and contort a bit. A couple more yowls and there'd
be a
new kitten! It was dark in the box so we used a flashlight, now and then,
to get
a better look.
After the third kitten was born, Nibs relaxed. I sensed that she was
done. Emma
noticed that the last gray kitten was still attached to "stuff".
Dr Janis and Dr
Kelly performed an "afterbirth-an-ectomy" - eeeuuu. Janis tied
off the umbilical
cord with thrread and cut it while I assisted.
These kittens are sooooo cute.
