Today we decided to do the first big
hike of summer. Looking for ideas, I scanned through a list of
nearby geocaches to find one that was close to home, but long
enough to provide a nice hike. The Thorn Bush Cache (GCC72F)
looked like it would be just the ticket. The trailhead was on the
South-East corner of White Ranch Park. This is the aerial view of
the our track log looking from the North-West. We started at the
South (left) side and found the cache at the North (right) side of the
track.
The temperature was mild, but the
humidity was sky-high. With the wide variety of greens, it looked
more like Ireland than Colorado.
This wasn't a great day for broad vistas, so I spent more time
admiring the spring wildflowers than the views. I don't know
nuthin about flowers, so if anyone knows what they are, speak up!
We saw these bodies of water to the
North-East of the trail, and checked them out on the map. Much to
Kelly's surprise, the one on the left turned out to be Ralston
Reservoir. The next one to the right is upper Long Lake with lower
Long Lake just above it. The houses in this area are your typical
$2,000,000+ cottages.
Flowers everywhere.
The whatchcallems were in bloom along
the trail.
When we finally arrived at the cache
coordinates, I stood on the trail with the GPS pointing just 5
feet to the cache. Meanwhile Kelly, unencumbered by his
GPS, just started to bushwhack out behind the trail. While I was
on the trail peering into nooks and crannies, Kelly called out
that he had found the cache 20 feet off the trail. To reach
the cache, he had to climb through bushes, cacti and the eponymous
thorn bushes. Even within just a few feet, it
was difficult to spot.
The cache was in a Tupperware
container that had been wrapped in some kind of brown packing tape
that worked perfectly as camouflage.
After signing the log book, we went a bit further down the trail
and found a nice spot to sit and eat lunch. While we were eating
another hiker walked past us staring intently at something he was
carrying in his hand. Another geocacher. On the way back we
got to snicker at someone else trying to find this well hidden cache.
It wound up taking us 4:14 to cover only 6.35 miles
round trip. It's a good thing we do this for fun and not for
a living.
