Mary Gets A Futon
August 31, 1997

It's been on her list a long time, Mary wanted a futon.  So yesterday she got
to pick one out.  She wanted to get a blue one, since that's the color she
wants her room to be painted, but the cranberry color she got should look nice.
She slept on just the pad last night, covered with a blue bedspread.  We'll
get things setup today.

Emma inherits the bunkbed and is excited.  Took Janis and I a while to tear
things down and move them.  While moving things around we found some long lost
treasures that had fallen into inaccessible places.  I thought I had found a
long dead critter, but it turned out to be Emma's missing brown rabbit pelt (I
guess I DID find a dead critter).

Today Mary's room is being painted.  A nice 'morning glory blue' is getting
applied to the walls right now.  Going to redo some shelves and move things
around too.

Kittens Update

The wee ones are getting fluffier.  The black and the gray ones opened their
eyes today.  They've been moving around a bit more lately.  I found the black
one outside the box last night, crying.  I put him back in and he quieted
right down.  He is the loud one.  Currently they each weigh ~8 ounces.  Long
Dave came by yesterday to look at the litter.  He's planning on adopting one
(or two) when they're weaned in about 6 or 7 weeks.  We plan to keep one,
probably the tabby.

We've been wondering if we'll need to put up some sort of kitty barrier.  Janis
has plans to borrow a puppy "corral" from a friend.  I think I like the idea of
knowing the kittens would be limited to a small area of the house, at least
while they are very young.

Miscellanious - This and That

Advanced Perl Class

Went to an Advanced Perl class taught by Tom Christiansen, co-auther of "the
camel book".  Oh my head!  It was an experience.  I think everyone who attended
feels they've been annointed by the mere presence of --tom.

We had taken a beginner's perl class in December and had planned to wait a bit
then take an advanced course.  Worked out well too.  By this time, we've all
had enough time to develop questions beyond the introductory stuff.  But still
Tom's depth of knowledge was WAY too much for us.  I snagged a glimmer or two.
Other's picked up their own prizes.  It was also good to learn we're doing the
things we're doing right (or at least not wrong).  Went to three new restaurants
to boot!

It's good to get one's mind stretched by a god/guru.

Other Critters

The tadpoles are all frogs now.  The last one has just a tiny stub of a tail.
Apparently they've been eating the bugs we've been throwing into their ter-
rarium.  The two crayfish are still alive.  Saw them yesterday while swapping
the water.

The new brown praying mantis has little piles of bug parts, leftovers, littering
its jar.  Found this critter hanging on our bathroom screen last week.  Pulled the
screen into the house and captured it.

BBQ At Christa's

Had a nice BBQ at Christa's home last night.  Rosy and Cracklin' Dave served up
some nummy brats and other goodies while we chatted on their deck.  Planning
a bicycle trip through Glenwood Canyon this October.  The idea is to bring two
vehicles, parking one at the bottom of the ride so we won't have to pedal
back uphill.  We're going to do a little practice ride in a couple weeks.

Nice backyard, tall bushes, trees, nice flowers.  Sitting there chatting, with
the bug torches flickering was so nice.  Patted the dog Daisy, the cat Scamps.
Talked about all sorts of things; scary movies, old TV shows, Maine/Vermont,
kids, water world, lots of stuff.  Good, comfortable company.
